Let alone travelling international which many people desire, they do not have a passport. A passport is usually needed for traveling internationally, but there are only several opportunities for crossing borders without a passport. Here's what you need to know.
Land and sea travel
When traveling by land or sea between the United States and some other countries, you may be allowed to enter with other forms of identification based on the country in question.
Canada and Mexico: Yes, it is possible to go to Canada or Mexico without a passport in some cases. On land and at sea, one can use NEXUS card, enhanced driver’s license, Global Entry card, U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner card, SENTRI card or other trusted traveler program cards. You may also be able to use a birth certificate or naturalization certificate plus a government-issued photo ID. They vary according to the means of transport and the port of entry, therefore one should consult the relevant authority before intending to travel.
Caribbean regions: When traveling to some Caribbean islands and areas including Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, British Virgin Islands, and Caribbean Netherlands, one can use any government issued photo ID together with an original copy of birth certificate or a certified copy of it. Some may apply to a specific country or region, so always check before travelling.
Some of these options are restricted to American citizens traveling within the United States and the Americas. For all other types of international travel, a valid United States passport book or passport card is required.
Cruise travel
Certain cruise line routes connect between US and overseas ports. Instead of a passport, the closed-loop travelers, who are the citizens of the United States, can provide a government-issued photo identification, as well as a birth certificate or certificate of naturalization that has been original or a certified copy. However, this depends with the cruise line, and therefore it is advisable to consult the cruise operator for more details.
The birth certificate exception is in effect for cruise ships which start and end at the same port in the United States calling at other ports in international territories in the interim. You cannot at any given time vessel your way in a foreign country without going through customs ad immigration authority and for this you will require a passport.
Air travel
Air travel is more limiting as one cannot board a commercial flight from one country to another without a passport because of the airline and immigration policies. The only exceptions are for destinations in North America.
For any other situation, the airline carrier’s regulation requires a valid passport for anyone wishing to board any commercial international flight. It is possible that some carriers agree to very restricted extent to accept a passport or a birth certificate that has already expired, but do not rely on this.
Why you still need a passport
As much as it may be possible to undertake some journeys without a passport, it is most convenient to possess one when undertaking international journeys. Here's why:
