Everyone has their peculiar ways of getting from one location to the other in terms of transport. It is clear that some individuals find driving fascinating while others get fascinated with public transport systems. And then there are those who practice active transportation, such as walking or cycling as much as they can. In this article, I will describe the different modes by which the population usually commute and some of the aspects that define such movements.
Driving
Auto ownership has become the norm among the population, so people tend to use their own car for most of their travels. This advantage cannot be trumped by any in many suburban and rural areas which may have inadequate transport systems. Some of the benefits of driving alone include; privacy, such as when driving alone in a car rather than taking a bus or a taxi, the ability to decide things like when to leave and where to go or what kind of music to listen among others.
But there are also some disadvantageous effects of reliance on personal vehicles. Expenses such as car loans and installment, insurance, repair and gasoline expenses are expensive. Of course, people contribute to congestion and emissions individually, but they and other vulnerable groups also suffer when driving is the only reasonable transportation option. Nevertheless, the convenience that cars offer will remain a key reason why car owners will remain the most preferred transport option for personal use among the population.
Public Transit
Whether as buses, light rails, subway systems, or commuter trains, public transportation provides a shared mobility option that can have positive civic and environmental impacts in many metros. Taking the mass transportation also reduces the pressure associated with driving in traffic congestion and the problem of where to park close to your intended destination. Comfortable seating, reading materials, a fascinating view of passing faces and bodies, and even dozing off are possible if on the road alone.
On the negative side we found that public transportation entails fixed time, longer time and being unable to control the weather and other passengers. First-time users can also be inconvenienced by navigational issues. However, the use of mass transport helps many carless citizens of a city reach their destinations cheaply. Some of the bus and train lines have also started providing passengers with free WiFi and other perks to make the journey more comfortable.
Walking
When it comes to a distance of less than one mile, many people have no option but to walk given that it is the easiest mode of transport. Traveling at street level is far more personal than passing through a city in a car where everything feels like a blur. There are no expenses incurred when walking, no equipment needed and people get to exercise at the same time.
However, none would be willing to walk more than a couple of miles for transport, unless in the most congested cities in the world. Concerns such as the weather, the uneven terrain, traffic danger and crime also make walking less possible for some. However, integrating walking into a longer trip allows for many sustainable travel options.
Biking
Bicycling adds distance reach for human-propelled transportation while offering most of the immersive characteristics of walking. They are less expensive than cars to acquire and maintain, require much less space than motor vehicles and promote exercise as you pedal. They do not isolate the riders as insulated, cocoon-like cars do and allow the riders to feel more connected with their surroundings as well as residents.
Nevertheless, transportation via bikes is still a challenge in urban areas for some populace such as children, the elderly, the disabled and those who have bulky items to carry. Challenging climate, poor road conditions, and motorized traffic are also factors that limit the increased use of bicycles for daily transportation. But even these bike-friendly cities are still expanding on bicycle facilities such as the protected bike lanes, bike trails, and bike sharing systems that enhance the safety, convenience, and availability of the bike mode.
In Summary
How you travel is based on factors such as where you have to get to, how far it is, how much time you have, and what modes of transport you actually have at your disposal. Long-distance will continue to see private vehicle owners relying more on driving than before especially given the flexibility it offers. However, pro度 active shared modes can be effective in easing congestion and emissions issues where feasible. Adoption is more frequent in congested cities with infrastructure for bus/rail, biking and pedestrian transportation. It is important to note that no single mode of delivery will ever effectively meet all the needs that are required by the society. But enabling and prioritizing greener options helps move more people with fewer negative impacts when possible. Honestly, we are all directly involved in that process through decisions we make on a daily basis on how to get from one point to another.
